Note

Alfred signed up to hoin the Army a month before his 16th Birthday. He gave his age as 17yrs and 2 months. He was sent to France to fight in but when his true age became known he was put in the Drum Corps. He was gassed and injured in his arm. He was sent home to convalesce and went to stay with relatives of his father at Beaver Farm, Carlisle. While he was there WW1 ended. He never returned to Caterham. He met and married Sarah Roe in 1920 and settled in Carlisle.
