Henry’s family recollections
“Harry was the kindest soul I’ve ever met, and one of the wittiest. Everyone loved my granda.” Henry remembers Harry as tall and slim, about six feet tall like Henry himself. “People say I’m like him.”
Henry thinks his granda’s nickname, “Wrecker”, may have come from serving on the crews of planes that grounded. This is his suggested explanation. An archive note separately records a ditching in the Adriatic. Harry’s police work brought the Browns close to the McDonald family. His daughter Chris grew up with David McDonald, the son of a police colleague.
Henry remembers Mary and Harry living in Carlisle, in Northumberland and in Tewkesbury.
Asked what came to mind when he pictured his grandparents at home, Henry said, “Nana would be making turnip soup, granda drinking a glenfiddich whisky.”
