Henry’s family recollections
Henry remembers his dad as “very kind and loving” and says of his parents, “I couldn’t have imagined a better childhood with them.” He also remembers the weight of his dad’s expectations: “Dad always encouraged me to do whatever I wanted, but was also disappointed that I wasn’t more academic. I remember feeling pressure and stress that I would never be as good as him.”
When Stuart was born in February 1948, his parents lived on Ilchester Crescent in Bristol. Henry remembers how strongly his dad wanted to leave Bristol. At eighteen Stuart did just that, moving to London to study metallurgy at Imperial College London. The family tree dates his studies to 1966–1969. Henry also remembers that Stuart played the cello in the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Straight after university, Stuart joined Alcan’s graduate training scheme and stayed with the company for years. Henry remembers his dad playing an important part in Alcan’s takeover of Minalex. Stuart later worked for Redman Fisher.
Chris and Stuart met in Hexham at the wedding of David McDonald, Henry’s godfather. David and Chris had been friends since childhood. Their fathers worked together in the police, and the two families were close. The family photograph of Chris and Stuart at Hadrian’s Wall was taken the day after David’s wedding.
